Lakeside Jazz reopens on 15 February with the 2012 Spring Collection

15 February
The very best of British jazz

The John Law Trio

The first event in the 2012 calendar goes to the John Law Trio. No discordant modernism nor unmelodic writing, just great improvisation combined with wonderful integration. These three musicians are among the very best in British Jazz today and making their presence felt around the world.
A perceptibly Monkish player of immense tenacity, character and freedom from cliché, Law is steeped in both classical music and jazz. He is captivating at low volumes and sure-footed on swing. In a shift toward accessible influences, the trio incorporates brilliant interpretations of well known standards, Law’s original beautiful romantic ballads and even includes rock-derived themes. With bassist Yuri Goloubev and thrilling drummer Asaf Sirkis he hops themes and time signatures without blinking.

22 FebruaryDavis, Parker, Gillespie . . .

Chris Ingham’s Rebop
‘Kinda Blue-ish’

A tight, swinging modern jazz ensemble, this band revels in the music of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis. Rebop is a jazz repertory aggregation keeping alive the art of bebop and related music. They were formed originally as a quintet to examine the output of the modern jazz explosion of 1944 to1949. Now a six-piece band, they also feature a faithful homage to the Miles Davis Sextet of 1958-59. Rebop describe their sound as ‘Classic jazz of the 40s and 50s’, and recreate the innovative and exhilarating modern jazz that flowered in the mid 1940s in the hands of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis and other great jazzmen. Educational and great jazz – what more could you want?

Martin Eaton’s
Tribute to
Nat King Cole

Straddling the divide between pop and jazz, Nat ‘King’ Cole enjoyed unprecedented success. An excellent pianist with a velvety baritone voice, Cole kept the top ten filled with enduring songs. All it takes is a look at this brief list to recall instantly the sound of his voice: Straighten Up and Fly Right, Unforgettable, Too Young, Mona Lisa, I Love You For Sentimental Reasons. With his untimely death age 45, the world lost a major talent. In this special tribute, Martin Eaton, tenor sax and vocals plus a trio including Simon Brown on piano rekindle the King Cole magic.
