4 August – The classic Hammond sound

Russell William’s Hammond Trio

With Russell Williams grooving at his Hammond organ, muscular tenor sax, and super-sharp drumming this trio has developed their own brand of
no-nonsense be-bop together with some wonderful Jimmy Smith-influenced Blue Note sounds. This little band is one of the most swinging ensembles appearing at Lakeside.
Russell himself has had a busy season performing in and around the Peterborough/Cambridge area. He scored some great reviews for his recent concert as part of the prestigious Hertford Music Festival

11 August – Two guitars and tenor sax

Destination Swing

Back by popular demand, Destination Swing is a trio consisting of two guitars and one tenor saxophone. Guitarists Paul Hill and Jasper Smith have worked together as a jazz guitar duo at festivals, arts centres and jazz clubs throughout the UK. In addition to their duo engagements, both musicians have performed in any number of jazz settings fronting their own jazz ensembles. The rich sounding tenor sax playing of Martin Eaton completes the personnel. Paul and Jasper play seven-string guitars which extends the instruments range into the bass territory and really underpins the performances. Featuring closely harmonised melodies and arrangements, the trio’s set ranges from standards to contemporary material but always with an emphasis on improvisation and swing, of course!

Martin Eaton, tenor sax; Jasper Smith, guitar; Paul Hill, guitar

Admission £8

18 August – Exciting music, great humour

Alan Barnes with the
Simon Brown Trio

Alan has enjoyed a prolific career, playing and recording for many bands and is currently acknowledged as one of the UK’s finest reeds players. He broadcast regularly over a ten-year period with the BBC Big Band and has toured and recorded with band leaders, Dick Walter, Kenny Baker, Bob Wilber, Don Weller, Humphrey Lyttleton, Stan Tracey, and John Dankworth. Other bands he has toured and recorded with include the Tina May Trio, Bill LeSage Quintet, Spike Robinson's Tenor Madness, Clare Teale, and a sextet with Don Weller playing the music of Cannonball Adderley. Alan has been featured on many jazz recordings from his first record date as co-leader in 1985 with Tommy Whittle and as leader of his own quartet in 1987 right up to recent record dates with Scott Hamilton, Warren Vache and Harry Allen. SUMMER  BREAK

No gigs for the next four weeks:

September 1, 8,15 and 22

29 September – Back in their regular slot

The Matt Wates Sextet

This is another welcome return for the Matt Wates Sextet. The ensemble is a swinging, modern jazz group made up of six of Britain’s finest jazz musicians playing with attack and cohesion. Individually they solo with breath-taking dexterity and exciting improvisation. Appearing at many jazz festivals around the country, the band mixes originals with fresh adaptations of standards for an evening of exhilarating music. In style, the sextet resembles many of the great small bands of the 50s and 60s, such as those of Horace Silver and Art Blakey. As Matt himself says ‘We take inspiration from the past, but we are not trying to replicate it, merely to add in a small way to the music for which we have the deepest respect and love. The heart and soul of the band will always be straight-ahead swing.

Matt Wates, alto sax; Steve Main, tenor sax; Martin Shaw, trumpet; Leon Greening, piano; Malcolm Creese, bass; Matt Home, drums

Admission £10
